Yankees: Opening Day- By Ryan J. Murphy

I just wanted to write a column on what I think the Yankees batting order and pitching rotation will be on opening day, and what I think it should be.

Most likely will be:

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Curtis Granderson, CF
3. Robison Cano, 2B
4. Alex Rodriquez, 3B
5. Mark Teixeira, 1B
6. Nick Swisher, RF
7. Russell Martin, C
8. Raul Ibanez, DH
9. Brett Gardner, LF

C.C. Sabathia
Michael Pineda
Hiroki Kuroda
Ivan Nova
Freddy Garcia

What I think it should be:

1. Derek Jeter
2. Curtis Granderson
3. Robinson Cano
4. Mark Teixeira
5. Alex Rodriquez
6. Nick Swisher
7. Raul Ibanez
8. Russell Martin
9. Brett Gardner

I think the pitching rotation looks strong and balanced just the way it is predicted to be. I think A-Rod should be hitting 5th, because that will only help take the pressure off him, hopefully producing more RBI’s and home runs from him. Cano is the best hitter in the lineup now, and is their man going forward. Granderson, although, will be a force for the Yanks for years to come as well. Teixeira is too inconsistent and has too low of an average to carry them. Ibanez should be hitting before Martin because Ibanez is not only left handed (good because Yankee Stadium’s short right field fence will help him), but because he’s more consistent then Martin, and has a better average.

What do you think?

  1. i agree a rod has too much pressure on him and becaude of that hes too inconsistent. but i dont think tex is that inconsistent.

  2. I just feel that tex had a bad year last year, he wasn't himself

  3. Ryan, you are forgetting about Phil Hughes. I think he will be the fifth starter.

  4. Who do you like better, Granderson or Cano?

  5. Hughes won't beat out Garcia. He will challenge him when it comes to earning the starting spot but I think Garcia will be the 5th. And wow, thats a hard question. I am going to have to say Granderson, although my favorite Yankee by far is Nick Swisher.

  6. Ryan-I believe that Hughes will eventually be in the starting rotation. Garcia did a good job, but Hughes is the future. I do agree I like Swisher--he gives his all. What do you think of the "Red Sox provision" the extra wild card just to help the sox. They are always complaining about the AL east being so hard, so the extra wild card should help them. I am a true blue Yankee fan.

  7. Oh, of course. I believe that Hughes will be in the rotation eventually as well. Although not this year, unless someone gets hurt. Garcia is older, 35, in October he'll be 36, so he probably only has a year or 2 left. The Red Sox just complain, you're right, although I do like this new idea of a one game wild card playoff. Personally I think they should do what the NHL does, have 8 teams from each conference, in baseball its leagues, but that gives more teams a chance. Baseball plays a helluva lot more games than any other sport and the teams should have more opportunities to make the playoffs, like 8 teams each league.

  8. Ryan- NHL playoffs I think is 3 game playoff, 5 game playoff and the final is a 7 game playoff. Do you like that idea, if baseball went the way of the NHL. I am not sure how many games in a season the NHL plays but I think it close to baseball.

  9. NHL plays an 82 game series. MLB plays a 182 game series. NHL playoff series are all a best of 7. That's how I believe baseball should work. 4 wins by one team and the series would be over

  10. Ryan-Don't you think that since baseball is adding another series (extra wild card) they should cut the season to maybe 172 games. That would give teams a little rest and especially if they are playing for a division leading spot (homefield advantage is important).

  11. You mean add 10 games? Cutting the season would be making it less. I think they should just add 4, well now with this new wild card round, 3 teams in each league to the playoffs. Maybe make the first few series 3 or 5 game series

  12. Ryan-No. What I mean is cut 10 games from the season, so when the playoffs roll around the teams would have a rest. Also remember, in the A.L.East the teams are usually clustered together so there maybe a playoff game to determine the winner or even wild card. Also during the summer the rain cancellations are played at the end of the season sometimes, so that would give a little extra time for those special conditions. I don't see how, under the present conditions, the season would remain the same with the extra wild card. I would think that the owners would like some concessions to protect their investments(players). Your thoughts.

  13. Ok, well the MLB season is 162 games, not 182. That could work, yes. Cut 10 games, have a week and a half or so off, and then have playoffs. Quite frankly my opinion is it doesn't matter how they do that, i juts think they should add more teams into the mix. It adds more excitement that baseball terribly needs. Remember 2 years ago when the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks beat the reigning Super Bowl Champion Saints. Marshawn Lynch had that huge run which sealed the deal? It adds an excitement factor, and also anything can happen. Who thought the Giants would've made the run that they did. They wouldn't have even been in the playoffs if the NFL was 4 teams in each conference. I think 8 teams, first 2 series should be 3 games, next 5, and World Series 7. The season is remaining the same under the new wild card thing because the new added extra wild card thing is just one game, and the winner is the wild card team. One game isn't gonna be a huge difference to decrease the number of regular season games anyway, so no need to change it.

  15. I think the season should be shortened. By the end of Sept, I am tired of baseball. Six months is enough, sometimes too much.

  16. I do agree, baseball does get boring after a while. Maybe 140 game season, plus a new playoff system involving more teams.
